Collagen induction therapy (CIT), also referred to as microneedling, is a process used to improve the look of skin over time by creating microchannels which both aid the body in building collagen and dramatically improve the penetration of skin care ingredients. CIT assists the body’s own natural collagen-building processes in order to optimize cell function in the layers of the skin while preserving the outside layer (epidermis). When performed by a professional, the therapy is considered to be a safe, cost-effective treatment for acne scars, wrinkles and stretch marks.
CIT can visibly improve the skin of those bothered by acne scarring, and does so with very little down time in comparison with other acne scar treatments. They frequently cause scabbing, redness and irritation for a week or longer, but with CIT, the patient can typically resume their normal makeup, skincare and lifestyle routines the next day.
Microneedling also aids in reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, because it increases the availability of cell nutrients and antioxidants by releasing epidermal growth factors that help the epidermis and dermis to function optimally. Research has shown that these processes have a beneficial effect on the skin for up to two years.
Although CIT is a treatment that works over time, it is gentler, easier and more cost-effective than other treatment options that are available—especially when trying to minimize acne or other superficial scarring. Microneedling is also useful in minimizing stretch marks by improving the density of the epidermis. It can help curb hair loss by increasing blood flow, and in conjunction with the application of topical products, by increasing the availability of nutrients to the cells.
The benefits of microneedling are many and it can be a great way to improve skin over time. Those interested should seek a professional to help them determine if it is a safe and realistic treatment option for their particular situation.
